چکیده

Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf lichen specimens were collected every 5 km starting from around an iron-steel factory located in the central area of Karabük province, up to Yenice Forest. Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr contents were analyzed in the samples collected from polluted and unpolluted areas. A Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf sample from Yenice Forest was used as a control. The reason for this choise was the abundance of species diversity, and therefore sample collection might cause a very low impact on natural population density. The forest is among the 100 forested areas that must be urgently taken under protection according to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) researches. Results of the current study manifested significant variations among the contents of these elements between stations. As expected, the pollution sources, such as iron-steel factory, roads and railroads, industry, heavy traffic, and waste treatment plants, have major impact on the heavy metal accumulation in P. furfuracea (L.) Zopf, and, in accordance to their location, samples 8 and 10 displayed high element accumulation. Surprisingly, although Yenice Forest is under protection, results of our study showed that the region is becoming polluted by the influence of many pollution sources in the area. The present study also confirms the efficient metal accumulation capacity of lichens.

Evaluation of genotoxicity of Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf by RAPD analysis.

We investigated the suitability and applicability of Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf for environmental genotoxicity assessment. P. furfuracea lichen specimens were collected from 10 different Pinus species, in every 5 km, starting from around an iron-steel factory located in the central area of Karabük Province up to Yenice Forest. The impact of the pollution sources such as iron-steel f...

Study on accumulation ability of two lichen species Hypogymnia physodes and Usnea hirta at iron-steel factory site, Turkey.

The use of biological responses to contaminant exposure by lichen species has become a useful tool in environmental quality evaluation and risk assesment. Lichen Hypogymnia physodes and Usnea hirta samples were collected in 2006 from 10 sites around iron-steel factory in Karabük, Turkey. H. physodes and U. hirta samples from Yenice forest were used as a control. The aim of present study was to ...

Review of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Aquatic Environment of Northern East Mediterrenean Sea Part II: Some Non-Essential Metals

Heavy metals that enter marine environment and remain in the water as well as the sediments are accumulated by aquatic organisms, thus becoming highly good indicators to monitor metal accumulation in the long run. Metals are potentially harmful to humans and most organisms at varied levels of exposure and absorption. Northern East Mediterranean Sea is a crucial region as it is an area, shared b...

Investigate the effect of distance from source and species type on the absorption ability of heavy metals by tree species around Nahavand cement factory

This study aims at investigating the effect of distance from source, species type and soil physical chemical properties on the absorption ability of heavy metals by tree species around the Nahavand cement factory. In the present research, soil and tree leaf (Pseudoacacia L, Populus nigra L, Elaeagnus angustifolia L, Fraxinus excelsior and Thuja orientalis L) samples were taken from 300, 500, 80...
